Grattitude

The one thing I have been doing to bring myself out of the future and center myself in the present.

Like most, I can get consumed in the what-ifs of the future. I struggle to be in the present sometimes because it means I must face the now. The niggling emotions that are like voices just waiting for you to be quiet, still and think you have your shit together before jumping out at you and saying, “hey there I think you forgot about me”. This has been a more prevalent challenge now for me than before. Being a university student, my whole future is virtually up for negotiation. How many times will I have to move? How will I find a job? Do I need a job? Do I need a car? I know time travel is not proven but I try to transport myself to the future with my fears.

On a Monday coffee date with a soul sister chatting away these worries re-surfaced and my lovely friend gave me some simple advice. Every night or morning write a list of just three things you are grateful for in that moment. While I dabble in meditation and yoga past attempts at a gratitude journal have not been very successful. But I thought okay girly I going to try this and what happened? I haven’t missed a single night in two weeks. This is a big deal. And whilst no it hasn’t changed all my problems it keeps me accountable to have a moment in my day when I am completely in the now. It also gives me a moment to feel anything that has popped up during the day and triggered me, feel it and reflect so I can work towards be aware of those triggers and emotions the next day.

Start right now, tonight or in the morning. It may not align with your truth or feel like a practice for you and that’s ok too. I have a journal I write in which I also can reflect on my day and anything that comes up whilst doing my gratitude. When you write each one down take a deep breath and feel it. Feel the gratitude. The joy, humility or laughter. This is the key.

Just three things. The least you can do is make time to appreciate at least three beautiful things.

Below are a couple of apps I have used in the past as well.
